Last night saw the winners of the 2012 L'Oréal Fellowships UK & Ireland For Women In Science Awards announced in a ceremony at London's Royal Society. The four female scientists were each awarded fellowships of £15,000 to spend on whatever they need to continue their research. Dr Silvia Giordani, from Trinity College Dublin, won for her work on a new avenue towards Smart medicines, while Dr Katrina Lythgoe from Imperial College London was rewarded for her work in multiscale evolutionary dynamics of important human diseases. Dr Claire Spottiswoode, from the University of Cambridge won for her work on the genetics of cuckoo egg mimicry, and Dr Geetha Srinivasan (pictured), from Queen's University Belfast, was awarded for her work on ionic liquids enabling biomedical applications.
