From Dior to Crocs: Social Media Has Their Say

Written by: Elli Stylianides

Kim Jones has revealed his first campaign for Dior Men’s and it’s a royal debut to say the least. Photographed by Steven Meisel, the photos feature a giant floral sculpture by artist KAWS, set against a pastel pink backdrop. Prince Nikolai of Denmark and models Malick Bodian, Romaine Dixon and Valentin Caron starred in the campaign. Jones reportedly told WWD that he “wanted the advertising to reflect the spirit of the men’s summer show and the beauty of Dior.” On Twitter, some users think that “Kim Jones’ Dior is looking fire” while others have spotlighted on the young Prince instead.

Earlier this week, a video of a stray cat stealing the show at a Turkish fashion show went viral. The furry feline wandered onto the runway during the event in Istanbul and was captured cleaning itself and playing with the models’ clothes before attempting to strut her stuff down the runway itself. The irony of a cat walking down a catwalk was too much for the people of Twitter to handle, who wondered if she was wearing “Meowlph Lauren” or “Purrberry”.

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj’s fashion feud has intensified this week after Cardi B claimed that she turned down the offer to feature in Diesel’s ‘Hate Couture’ campaign before they approached Nicki. Bill Wickermann, CEO of Wilhelmina Models, turned to Twitter to support Nicki in a now deleted post stating “Tell the truth boo! That Diesel deal was built AROUND the one and only Queen. #truthwillsetyoufree.” In response to Cardi B’s claim, Minaj made a copy-cat claimant that Steve Madden approached her several times before tapping Cardi B. The tit-for-tat debate provoked Madden to chime in, but after the backlash he received, he was quick to apologise. With no clear indication of the feud dying down, we are left wondering if any other fashion brands and industry figures get sucked in.

In a bid to combat the pollution the fashion industry creates; several brands have signed an agreement to abolish plastic packaging. With some studies suggesting that the fashion industry is the second biggest polluter, 250 organisations including Burberry, H&M, L’Oréal and Inditex have teamed up to tackle the crisis. The brands aim to move away from single-use packages by ensuring that their packaging can be reused or composted by 2025. While a move towards more sustainable packaging is always welcomed, some on social point out that plastic in clothes is also an issue.

Rapper Post Malone just collaborated with Crocs on a limited-edition clog. While most people may think that a rapper is more likely to collaborate with the likes of Nike or adidas, Post Malone told Hypebeast “I wear Crocs everywhere from the bar to the stage.” Entitled the Dmitiri Clog, the shoe is styled like a classic holed-clog, with six custom-designed charms and a baby devil print design. The clog retails at $59.99 but has already sold out. Unsurprisingly, the Croc has divided opinions on social, with Post Malone’s loyal followers believing that the shoes are “gonna spread like wildfire,” whilst other fans commented that the rapper’s teen following are “too young to remember the mass banishment of Crocs about eight years ago.”
