From the Met Gala to Sports Illustrated: Social Media Has Their Say

Written by: Dale Barnett

On Monday, celebrities and the industry elite gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the biggest night in fashion. Each year the lucky few invited to attend the Met Gala dazzle fans with elaborate style statements, celebrating the marriage of fashion and art and racking up the column inches. 2019 didn’t disappoint. Adhering to the theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, Anna Wintour welcomed the likes of Lady Gaga, J.Lo, Cara Delevingne, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and the Kardashian-Jenners to the Met’s infamous steps. Social media users embraced the display with vehement appreciation and mockery in equal measure. Crazy love poured in for Billy Porter’s flamboyant 24-carat gold homage to an Egyptian Sun God and Ezra Miller’s transformative make-up, whilst Katy Perry’s chandelier-inspired get up and Celine Dion’s ‘spaghetti-adjacent’ number divided the social sphere.

Max Azria, fashion icon and founder of BCBGMAXAZRIA sadly died this week at the age of 70. The legendary Tunisian-born designer died of lung cancer at a Houston hospital on May 6. His brand was a staple on runways and was a favourite of celebrities including Drew Barrymore, Britney Spears, Halle Berry and Selena Gomez. The brand took to social media to break the news in a touching Instagram post. Tributes have poured in to the ‘visionary’ creator throughout the week. Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams commented on the post, writing: "My heart goes out to his family and those who worked with him through the years!! He was so kind and gracious..." Actress Debra Messing paid her respects, recounting: “He was the first designer to ever dress me when I came to LA and he made a custom dress for the night before my wedding.”

Last week Huda Beauty dropped its latest product, debuting N.Y.M.P.H (‘not your mama’s panty hose’) – a body highlighter inspired by Beyoncé. A much more intense makeup, the three-shade (Luna, Aphrodite and Aurora) metallic mixture looks like liquid gold and features a formula including nearly thirty percent shimmer, courtesy of light reflecting pearl pigments. Since Huda Kattan announced the drop on YouTube, influencer content has been surfacing throughout the week as beauty bloggers clamour to sample a drop. The brand shared posts from makeup influencers including Jamie Lee, Gary Thompson and Aishwarya Kaushal, describing it as ‘liquid pantyhose’. We’ve also spotted endorsements on the channels of Shafaq Novruz, Lena Bagrowska, Emalii and Ania Guellard to boot. One Instagram user pledges: “I will be making so many videos with this once I get my hands on it!”

Kendall Jenner may become the next member of the infamous Kardashian-Jenner family to launch her own cosmetics empire, according to the press this week. The model is reportedly setting the wheels in motion to follow her sisters leads with KKW Beauty and Kyle Cosmetics, applying for a trademark for both ‘Kendall’ and ‘Kendall Jenner’ patents. Marking her first solo business venture, the trademarks have been filed for beauty products across skin, hair, makeup and fragrance, hair-care, bath and shower, body creams, skin cleansers, beauty masks, deodorant, lip gloss, nail polish and nail-care. Whilst media outlets are excited to see what’s to come, social media users are a little more sceptical, with one Tweeter suggesting: “She should come up with something different than her sisters... like an active wear line.”

On Wednesday morning, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit revealed Tyra Banks as its Summer 2019 cover girl. Marking a spectacular comeback and bringing the media mogul out of retirement in style, Tyra graces the front of the double issue in a yellow string bikini. Many have pointed out that Banks was the first black woman to ever appear solo on the cover of the magazine in 1997 and this marks her third cover for the publication. Sharing the image on Twitter and Instagram, Banks writes: “This is for everybody that has been told that they are not good enough because of their body, their age, their everything…” Social media users have come out in force to congratulate the now 45-year-old model – including Duckie Thot and Lily Aldridge. Fans have commented: “Gorgeous and motivational”, “UNREAL” and “Look at this Queen.”
